Collecting the 21st Century – a Welsh perspective
The first lecture on the subject ‘’Collecting the 21st Century: a Welsh Perspective’’, was held on Thursday 9th May, 2013 in Pula, by Owain Rhys, curator of Contemporary Life at National History Museum in St Fagans, Wales. The lecture was based on Owain Rhys’s book ‘Contemporary Collecting: Theory and Practice’, divided into three chapters – Themes and Narratives, History of Contemporary Collecting and Collecting the 21st Century in Wales. As a passionate collector in his private life, today as curator he is trying to raise awareness of collecting objects from contemporary life which we also need to preserve for generations to come. The lecture was followed by a workshop entitled ‘What would you collect? Today’s objects for future generations’.
Museums and local communities
Museum communication
On Friday, 17th May, 2013, in the Rovinj Heritage Museum, the lecture and workshop were held by John Reeve, lecturer of the MA in Museums and Galleries in Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, and previously Head of Education at the British Museum. Through the lecture entitled ‘’Museums and local communities’’ he presented the examples of their collaboration in Great Britain, where he especially pointed up Liverpool and Newcastle, and the possibilities available to residents of rural areas, not having their own museums, but visited by ‘’museum on the move’’ bus. The subject of the workshop was ‘’How to communicate museum texts’’, or how to write a text which will present the museum exhibit in the most appropriate way. According to the invitation, the participants brought objects that have a special meaning for them, and they presented the text accompanying this potential museum exhibit, i.e. short and long museum labels.
